KwaMajola Conservancy

CVS has partnered with the KwaMajola district Community in the heart of traditional Zululand and created a unique destination which we look forward to sharing with you! This is an area well-know to us as we called it home for a long time. The country, the people and this region of the KwaZulu Natal Province of South Africa has a unique feel about it, which is very different to the rest of Zululand to the east, where most hunters have travelled to. Five of the CVS trackers still live in this area. This Conservancy will benefit the local community, the wildlife and the amazing ecosystem in this beautiful mountainous thornveld region!

In an attempt to best describe the KwaMajola Conservancy, we say it resembles Masailand in Tanzania, where one encounters wildlife, cattle, herdsmen and villages. There is no hunting area like this in South Africa! The Zulu people here still uphold their age old traditions and beliefs. Some of the trails you will walk on are centuries old. These were carved into the valleys by the ancestors of the Zulu people who live here today. The regional Chief – named Chief Mthembu (who has a few million subjects falling under his authority) is a great supporter of ours and has blessed our camp and the project and we have become friends.

The KwaMajola Conservancy & Safari Area is home to Nyala, Kudu, Bushbuck, Giraffe, Blue Wildebeest, Zebra, Impala, Bushpig, Warthog, Grey Duiker, Caracal, Jackal and Baboon. Cape Eland can be hunted nearby. Leopard and Spotted Hyena are present but are not on the quota – which is conservative. The hunting is challenging, rewarding and exciting and the countryside is magnificent with endless vistas. Hunting Nyala, Kudu and Bushbuck here requires patience and involves glassing of the many valley and canyon slopes. Walking is at your pace however some of the most productive valleys are accessibly by vehicle because of the good road network we’ve set up. Taking advantage of the high ground is the most effective way to hunt here. Success rates on Kudu, Nyala, Wildebeest, Zebra and Impala are high.

Our comfortable tented camp, situated near the Umsuluzi River, is clean, functional and more than comfortable with all the amenities that one needs in a safari camp. You will be accommodated in large, fully equipped classic safari tents. Each of the 3 tents has its own private ablutions comprising a flush toilet, hand basin etc and an open air “Hemingway style” bucket-shower which is equipped with proper drainage, floor mats etc. Your private shower and flush toilet are located just a few meters from your safari tent and the walkway is well lit at night. Lighting is solar powered. There is a lounge & dining tent near the campfire area under a beautiful Acacia tree canopy!  The massive boulder which is used as our outdoor bar and snack counter is the very same one that the men of the community and CVS gathered around at our inaugural meeting! We have a tented kitchen area from which our camp Chef will spoil you with delicious meals which will include some traditional South African cuisine!

Excellent bird shooting is available nearby as an add on to the safari and there are added attractions for observers who may enjoy some day trips to Weenen Game Reserve and Nambiti Game Reserve to photograph and view wildlife, including the Big 5.

Kwa Zulu Natal Midlands – CVS Base

The midlands region is just 1 hr 20 minutes drive east of Durban’s King Shaka Airport on South Africa’s east coast. We are based just a short drive from the small town of Hilton. We do hunt some fenced game reserves depending on the species being pursued, however the main focus in this region is to hunt on low fenced farms and conservancies for Common and Mountain Reedbuck, excellent Bushbuck, Vaal Rhebok, Blesbok, Bushpig, Eland, Grey duiker and from time to time Waterbuck and Oribi. We can also hunt a variety of other species a bit further away such as Red Hartebeest, Nyala, Black and Blue Wildebeest, Tsessebe, Springbok and more. The majestic Drakensberg mountain range which is often covered in snow during our winter months’ towers over the midlands and a fair amount of hunting is conducted in the beautiful foothills. Our guests are either accommodated at our base or in a country hotel nearby. There is plenty to see and do in this area and it offers some excellent trout fishing if there is time.
