Baboons are one of the most difficult animals to hunt – with sharp eyesight, baboons are quick to sound the alarm call if they feel threatened. It’s no surprise then that baboons are considered a hunter’s worst enemy, as they send out loud alarm calls if they see you and alert other game of your existence.
Baboons live in troops of up to 250 animals, with the average troop size numbering about 50 baboons. A baboon has a life expectancy of 25-30 years. Once a male baboon reaches sexual maturity (in five to eight years), it will usually leave the troop. With an omnivorous diet, baboons forage for food both day and night.
The usual shooting distance is between 90 and 140 metres. Because baboons will run at the slightest sound or movement or sound, you’ll need to sit quietly where they don’t see you.
Stalking a baboon is usually a fruitless activity, as they will run ahead of you out of your range. Rather set up a blind on the route they typically follow from their roost to their feeding grounds and back, early in the morning and late in the afternoon. With patience and accurate shooting, you’ll secure your prize.
We welcomed Roger for his 2nd safari with PH Hans Vermaak which took him to 3 areas – all of which offered 100% free-range hunting. Roger collected a variety of fine animals including a fabulous Roan, Baboon, Waterbuck, Hippo, Nyala and Bushbuck. Roger and Coenraad also had the opportunity to catch up having not seen each other since the mid 90’s!
