Crocodiles are a stark reminder of the dinosaur age. Large, formidable apex predators, these cold-blooded, semi-aquatic reptiles are descendants of Sarcosuchus (“flesh crocodile”), a crocodilian that inhabited Africa and South America approximately a 112 million years ago. The Nile crocodile is Sarcosuchus’ sub-Saharan descendant – and Africa’s largest crocodilian with a reputation as a man eater especially when they are old and huge.

A large and aggressive species with a dark bronze skin which darkens further as the animal matures, the Nile crocodile’s distinctively broad snout also widens with age. It takes two shots to prevent a crocodile submerging in the water, either to the spinal column behind the head or one straight into the exceedingly tough bone-encased brain.

The Nile crocodile’s hunting technique is aquatic stealth, so naturally he lives in water – mostly rivers and freshwater marshes but is also known to inhabit brackish water and mangrove swamps. These carnivorous reptiles take mostly mammals, fish, birds and other reptiles as prey. When killing larger prey, crocodiles are known for their “death roll” – the prey is caught and held with massive bite force, and the crocodile rotates along its length to subdue and dismember the prey under water.

Best Caliber to hunt crocodiles with is a 375 H&H with 300 gr premium grade soft ammunition. For where we hunt crocodiles its best to have your rifle zeroed at 150 yards. A 300-win mag or similar Caliber will do the trick but anchoring the crocodile to the spot where he is sunning himself is better achieved with a 375 and a follow up shot must come quickly.
