To hunt Africa’s most elusive and sought after spiral-horned antelope the magnificent Bongo, you need to venture into the enormous and somewhat daunting rainforests of Southern Cameroon. Shy and secretive, this is a tough hunt in thick vegetation, often in wet, rainy and muddy conditions which is exactly what you need when you are hunting Bongo.

Without rain it becomes difficult to find and follow tracks. Observing the pygmy trackers at work will astound you and most of the time you will not see the track they are following. Once they believe the Bongo is close by dogs are released to bay the animal which enables you to get in close to take your shot.

Other species which can be hunted in the forest include Dwarf Forest Buffalo, Forest Sitatunga, Giant Forest Hog, Yellow-backed Duiker and a host of Duiker species. We recommend renting a rifle instead of taking your own to the forest.

The best time to hunt the forest is from April thru July. Expect wet, muddy conditions which are ideal conditions to hunt Bongo. Contact us now for information on how hunts are structured and the permits/licenses that can be applied for.

The Savannah


In total contrast to the forest, the dry and hot savannahs of Northern Cameroon is where you will hunt Lord Derby Eland.
This is a challenging yet satisfying hunt for one of Africa’s most highly regarded and impressive animals.

The Lord Derby Eland is the largest antelope in Africa with an enormous set of spiralled horns, a massive frame and swaying dewlap combined with striking features. They are always super alert and seldom stand around once they sense danger.

Hunters must be capable of walking long distances in warm to hot conditions and must be ready and able to capitalize on a reasonable opportunity. Safaris normally take place early in the year during the rutting season when bulls congregate to follow the breeding herds, whilst their bulky necks turn dark black in colour. January through March is the preferred time to hunt for monster bulls!

There are a variety of other species on offer in the savannah which include Western Roan, Western Savannah Buffalo, Western Hartebeest, Red Flanked Duiker, Western Kob, Red River Hog, Bushpig and Hippo. If time allows fishing for fearsome Nile Perch in the Faro River is always fun in the evenings. A variety of Tigerfish subspecies are found in the rivers too, along with the ever-present Nile Crocodiles and Hippos.

Travel

International flights arrive in the city of Douala, where you will be met and transported to the hotel for your first night. The following day you will take a charter flight into the forests of Southern Cameroon to hunt Bongo, or a domestic flight to Northern Cameroon if you are hunting the savannah for Eland. Malaria prophylactics are required and its worth consulting your GP regarding other shots & meds that may be advised or required. Accommodation in the Cameroon

In both areas (forest and savannah) hunters are accommodated in the best airconditioned safari camps in the country. Returning to a well-equipped and comfortable camp at the end of each day certainly takes the edge off the harsh conditions one should expect in these faraway places.
